Poll: Demi Lovato's 'Confident' or Selena Gomez's 'Same Old Love'?

Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have been linked since childhood. They met as kids on the set of Barney and Friends, both grew up in the Disney Channel machine and both spent years trying to prove they were more than teen stars. So when each of them released a defining grown-up single in the same season, the comparison was impossible to resist. On one side stands Demi's roaring anthem Confident. On the other, Selena's cool, brooding Same Old Love. Which one deserves the crown?

The case for 'Confident'

Confident is the title track of Demi's album and it plays like a mission statement. Built on blaring horns, stomping drums and a marching-band swagger, it asks a simple question: what's wrong with being confident? Demi has one of the most powerful voices in mainstream pop, and here she uses every bit of it, belting with attitude over a production that feels bigger than life. The song sounds made for arenas, sports montages and, as viewers of Dancing With the Stars later saw, for dramatic ballroom routines. If you want pop that makes you walk taller, this is it.

The case for 'Same Old Love'

Same Old Love takes the opposite approach. Taken from Selena's album Revival and co-written by Charli XCX, it is restrained, sultry and a little bitter. The production is sparse, with a sliding piano line and a heavy beat, and Selena delivers the chorus with a breathy, almost exhausted cool that suits the lyrics about being tired of the same old heartbreak. It is not a vocal showcase, and it does not need to be: the song works through mood and atmosphere, and it marked the moment many listeners started taking Selena seriously as an adult pop artist.

Head to head

Two paths to growing up

What makes the pairing so interesting is how differently the two friends chose to present themselves as grown-ups. Demi leaned into strength and volume, celebrating self-assurance after very public personal struggles. Selena chose subtlety and vulnerability, letting the song's restraint speak for her. Both strategies worked, and both singles became staples on pop radio.
