JoJo: news, music and her comeback

JoJo, born Joanna Levesque in Massachusetts, became a star as a young teenager and went on to become one of pop and R&B's great comeback stories. Her voice has always been her calling card: rich, agile and far more mature than her age suggested when she first appeared. This page collects our JoJo coverage.

A teen sensation

JoJo burst onto the charts with Leave (Get Out), a sassy breakup anthem that made her one of the youngest artists ever to top the pop charts with a solo single. Her second album produced Too Little Too Late, another major hit that showcased her vocal power and earned her a devoted fan base.

Years of label struggles

Just as her career should have accelerated, JoJo became trapped in a long dispute with her record label. For years she was unable to release a proper album, even as she kept writing, recording and sharing free mixtapes online. Her fans stayed loyal, and the situation turned her into a symbol of how difficult the music industry can be for young artists. She eventually freed herself from the contract and later re-recorded her early albums so she could own her music again.

The comeback

JoJo's return began with a tringle, a release of three songs at once, including Save My Soul, a stirring track about the perils of addiction. She followed the video with a stripped-down acoustic version that stripped the song to piano and guitar, proving that her voice could carry it without big production. Taking Save My Soul to television for the first time on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she delivered a performance so emotional that even her guitarist applauded. Her album Mad Love confirmed that she was back for good.

Why fans keep cheering for her
